چکیده
We present the star formation histories, luminosities, colors, mass to light ratios, and halo masses of ”galaxies” formed in a simulation of cosmological reionization. We compare these galaxies with Lyman Break Galaxies observed at high redshift. While the simulation is severely limited by the small box size, the simulated galaxies do appear as fainter cousins of the observed ones. They have similar colors, and both simulated and observed galaxies can be fitted with the same luminosity function. This is significant to the process of reionization since in the simulation the stars alone are responsible for reionization at a redshift consistent with that of the GunnPeterson trough seen in the absorption spectra of QSO’s. The brightest galaxies at z = 4 are indeed quite young in accord with observational studies. But these brightest galaxies are free riders they contributed only about 25% to the reionization of the universe at z > 6. Instead, the bulk of the work was done by dimmer galaxies, those that fall within the 28 < I < 30 magnitude range at z ∼ 4. These dimmer galaxies are not necessarily less massive than the brightest ones. I show that advanced simulations of cosmological reionization are able to fit the observed data on the mean transmitted flux in the hydrogen Lyman-alpha line at z ∼ 6. At the same time, posteriori models can be constructed that also produce a large value (20%) for the Thompson scattering optical depth, consistent with the WMAP measurements. Thus, it appears that a consistent picture emerges in ...

The 2 Ms Chandra Deep Field-North survey provides the deepest view of the Universe in the 0.5–8.0 keV X-ray band. In this brief review we investigate the diversity of X-ray selected sources and focus on the constraints placed on AGNs (including binary AGNs) in high-redshift submm galaxies.

We use deep HST STIS and NICMOS images of three spectroscopically confirmed galaxy counterparts of high-redshift damped Lyα (DLA) absorbers (one of which is a new discovery) to test the hypothesis that high-redshift DLA galaxies are Lyman-break galaxies. If this hypothesis is correct the emission properties of DLA galaxies must lie within the range of emission properties measured for Lyman-brea...
